Rejecting recent statements by the Rev. Franklin Graham, a group of Madison religious leaders say they will hold an interfaith gathering at the same time the prominent Christian evangelist is scheduled to rally people at the state Capitol on Wednesday. The alternative service, called “Neighbors in Faith,” will celebrate religious diversity and the common good, according to organizers, who criticized Graham for comments he’s made about Islam, Muslim immigrants, atheists, gay people and others.

Founded “to create better understanding of the Abrahamic traditions and their interrelationships by encouraging ongoing discussion of these traditions among scholars, members of those traditions, and the general public,” the Lubar Institute has sponsored scores of events and publications: international conferences, art exhibitions, colloquiums, lectures, interfaith forums, workshops with primary and secondary schoolers, books, and student journals. Each project was designed to foster greater understanding of the Abrahamic religions, and to ratify the values of religious tolerance vital for thickening the bonds of American civil society. Two years ago Madison’s Memorial Day Brat Fest celebration invited Lifest of Oshkosh to the show, with a new stage featuring Christian music and a Sunday morning community worship service. A DeForest veterans group this weekend is unveiling a full-scale replica of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier that was built by members of a Madison church. The copy, which was built over the past five weeks in a storage building on Dayton Street, is to be unveiled in a Memorial Day ceremony at DeForest Veterans Memorial Park.

Ten years ago this month, madisonchristians.com began to serve the Madison Christian community, with articles on the Madison House of Prayer for All Nations and a Statewide Pastor’s Summit held in Madison. The House of Prayer closed a few months later but the opportunities to report on events in Madison’s Christian didn’t quit. In fact, though Madison’s reputation is otherwise, the stories we’ve reported clearly show it is a city with a vibrant Christian community and thriving churches.
