Steve Hayner, a Madison resident while he was president of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship and later on the pastoral staff of Highpoint Church, is facing a tough battle with pancreative cancer. Hayner is currently president of Columbia Theological Seminary (Presbyterian Church USA) in Decatur Georgia.
On his Caring Bridge site Hayner explained that he felt out of sorts on Easter Sunday and began medical tests to find out what was wrong. The latest news posted is that he is scheduled to begin a round of aggresive chemotherapy on May 28th.
Hayner’s ministry had a national impact as he led the national staff of InterVarsity’s campus ministry from the natonal office here in Madison. But he also served on the staff of Highpoint Church and had many local contacts.
Peter Wehner, a former deputy assistant to president George W. Bush and currently a senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington, wrote a compelling testimonial to Hayner’s pastoral ministry in Commentary magazine last week. The article is titled, “So we’ll choose the way of trust and joy instead.”
