Now that November is here it’s a great time to share about SHARE because although you can get a great deal on food from SHARE every month of the year, November has the best deal of all.
SHARE stands for Self Help And Resource Exchange. “SHARE is a nonprofit food buying club that offers good, nutritious products at reduced cost through a volunteer-run, community-based, distribution system.” Many of SHARE’s distribution sites (where orders are picked up) are located in churches and the program is run primarily by volunteers.
Anyone can join SHARE, there are no fees or other membership requirements. At the beginning of every month SHARE members order off of a short menu, and about 3-4 weeks later the order of fresh produce, frozen meats, and other items is delivered to a nearby church or other location, at an estimated savings of 30-50 percent below the grocery store cost.
I like SHARE because it saves a little money and cuts my time spent shopping by a little bit. And I like to support a program that can help people who really struggle with their food budget.
This week SHARE’s executive director, Paulette Flynn, happens to be blogging about accepting the Food Stamp Challenge, eating for a week on a Food Stamp budget. “I want to demonstrate just how well we can eat if we use SHARE’s BIG Value Package as the base of our week’s menus,” she writes.
That brings us to the November menu and a special SHARE package just for Thanksgiving. SHARE offers a 12-14 pound Turkey plus additional traditional Thanksgiving foods to feed a family of six for only $30. You can find the details on the Thanksgiving package (as pictured above), the monthly BIG Value Package, and the other items at SHARE’s online order page: https://www.sharewi.org/order/#TopOfPage.
Online orders must be in by Sunday, November 6th. The delivery day is November 19th.
If you’re not interested in a SHARE Thanksgiving for yourself, perhaps you would consider ordering one for a needy family that you know.
