My daughter has given me a collection of verses to write devotionals on. Okay, Liza, Dad is taking up the challenge! Here’s the first verse:
As the heavens are high and the earth is deep, so the hearts of kings are unsearchable. — Proverbs 25:3
Great! Thanks a lot, Liza. You couldn’t make it something easy like the 23rd Psalm, could you!
Okay, let me pray about this one.
One of the saddest things about growing up is that so many of us lose our sense of wonder. It seems frivolous to us to lie on the grass and look straight up into the heavens, to watch the clouds and the stars, to understand how small we really are. I live in Wisconsin, USA, and one of my favorite things to do is to walk through the woods in the autumn when the maple leaves have fallen making a red and yellow carpet for my feet. I could walk all day, feeling the bite of oncoming winter in the air, watching deer run from shadow to shadow in the trees beyond. I don’t have a business purpose in this, I just need to drink it in, because this is how God made me.
Are the hearts of kings unsearchable? There are always those who will try to reduce the souls of God’s royal children to a theological statement, or to a genetic formula, or to a set of psychological dynamics, just like there are those who will walk through the woods, naming the trees and birds and think they have seen all that there is to see.
But life is richer than that. Our hearts were prepared for eternity. Anything short of that cheapens us. Yes, we are all kings, or queens if you prefer. We were meant to walk with God.
Be encouraged!
