"I am about to go the way of all the earth," he [King David] said [to Solomon, his son]. "So be strong, show yourself a man … " — 1 Kings 2:2
Sooner or later we turn over the reins to someone else. A big part of our assignment here on earth is to equip someone(s) else to do what we cannot do. Even if you desire center stage, know this: you won’t hold it for long, and one of the best things you can do with your time is to make sure that the act that follows yours is good.
I’m writing this on Saturday. Even though I have an enormous amount of work to do, I’m planning to quit early and spend the balance of the day with my four children. How can I expect them to value what I value, if I don’t care about what they care about? I’m talking to myself here, because I’m still learning how to be a father.
The other day I stood on the bank of a river and watched the rain make ripples on the otherwise calm surface. Each raindrop sent out it’s concentric circles and touched the life of a few more drops before it died away. As I watched, I started doing the math in my head. And I realized that in the space of about a half hour I was witnessing a raindrop fall on this river for every man, woman and child who had ever lived.
What a precious gift, God has given us! A lifetime to bring good into our world and teach others to do the same.
Be encouraged!
