MadisonChristians.com commentary by Fred Grossenbach – Many of us have been praying for Revival in Madison for years. The prayer still goes on. We long to see God work in powerful miraculous ways to transform the city. I’m reminded however of Jesus’ statement to the Pharisees in the Gospel of John chapter 5 verse 17: “My Father is always at work to this very day, and I too am working.” So Jesus is at work today, right here in Madison. I think also of the parable of the sower and the seed in Luke chapter 8:5 -8. Jesus explains the…

By Emilie Heidemann – Wisconsin State Journal – ARGYLE — “We are going to be okay.” The Rev. Dan Bohlman, pastor of Apple Grove Lutheran Church that was destroyed Saturday by a tornado, told this Sunday morning to more than 100 people gathered near what little was left of the 129-year-old church building during a worship service to grieve its loss. The crowd convened just to the left of the rubble, some visitors crying with others somberly soaking in Bohlman’s words as he began the service. Attendees clapped when Bohlman said all would be well. They later sang hymns and…

A rainy Sunday at the end of a stormy week revamped Brat Fest plans for the last day of the 3-day festival. The music acts were condensed from three outdoor stages to one indoor stage, in the Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Brats were still for sale but Friday’s Take Your Brat to Work drive-through lanes were revived. And the cornhole tournament was moved to the Arena, starting right after the church service. An enthusiastic crowd of several hundred worshipers filled the Arena for the 9:00 am church service. “They have moved heaven and earth to get us out of the…

By Barry Adams, Wisconsin State Journal – TOWN OF VERMONT — Greg Herrling never dreamed his worries would include clearing brush from a trout stream and maintaining six miles of hiking trails. When the longtime member of Vermont Lutheran Church championed the creation of a legacy fund in 2018, the goal was to raise enough money to add a half-acre to the church cemetery and have enough left over for a rainy day fund that would ensure the church property be maintained for perpetuity, whether there was a congregation or not. The church has a history of more than 168…

By Seth Nelson- Wisconsin State Journal – Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Downtown Madison was damaged by fire Friday morning after its steeple was apparently struck by lightning. The first call about a fire at the historic church, at 120 W. Johnson St., came in at 11:17 a.m., about 10 minutes after witnesses reported hearing an extraordinarily loud boom in the area, likely from a lightning strike, Madison Fire Department spokesperson Cynthia Schuster said. By Jim Polzin – Wisconsin State Journal – It’s easy to assume that Will Pauling’s transition to the University of Wisconsin football program was a seamless one. Pauling’s results during the 2023 season certainly support the idea that he arrived in Madison 16 months ago and hit the ground running, that he’d passed through the transfer portal and landed in his comfort zone, that it was easy to produce on the field because he was at peace off it. CJ Williams had come to the same conclusion. He, too was part of Luke Fickell’s first transfer haul, and nobody from…

By TIM SULLIVAN – MADISON, Wis. (AP) — It was the music that changed first. Or maybe that’s just when many people at the pale brick Catholic church in the quiet Wisconsin neighborhood finally began to realize what was happening. The choir director, a fixture at St. Maria Goretti for nearly 40 years, was suddenly gone. Contemporary hymns were replaced by music rooted in medieval Europe. So much was changing. Sermons were focusing more on sin and confession. Priests were rarely seen without cassocks. Altar girls, for a time, were banned. At the parish elementary school, students began hearing about abortion…

The Madison Christian Giving Fund (MCGF), which has raised and disbursed over $1 million to local Christian ministries over the past decade, is in a leadership transition. Fred Grossenbach, who has been a key MCGF leader and most recently served as executive director, is stepping down. “Due to unexpected health issues that have prevented Fred from being at 100% capaciity, he has decided to step away from his leadership role at MCGF,” reports an April 13 post on the MCGF website. The article includes a lengthy reflection from Fred on why MCGF was begun, on what it has accomplished in…

By Chris Rickert – Wisconsin State Journal – By day, he’s a key member of a conservative law firm known for being at the center of some of the state’s most contentious policy and culture war battles. The rest of his time, he’s a husband and the father of three sons who attend the local public schools in perhaps the most politically progressive city in the Midwest. Luke Berg, 39, first came to Madison from his hometown of Stevens Point to attend UW-Madison, where he studied philosophy, math and computer science. He’d long had his eye on the law, though……
