So that all men He has made may know His work, He stops every man from his labor. — Job 37:7
What is a snowflake? It is practically nothing – a small drop of water – crystallized into ice – a mere breath will melt it. But, put enough snowflakes together, and a city of several million people, like Chicago, shuts down.
Snowplows, shovels, snow blowers and millions of hours of labor later, the roads are cleared, the sidewalks are shoveled, and life resumes. Yet, if the Lord chooses, another eighteen inches of snow can be on the ground the next morning. Or, if He chooses, He can bring out the sun and effortlessly turn the snow into slush, the slush into water, the puddles into dry pavement once again.
I like to imagine that my work is terribly important. I sometimes kick my kids out of my office so I can get some work done. But what is my work and what is your work compared to the work of God?
"Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain that build it." (Psalm 127:1) I’m sure Job thought his work of managing great wealth and showing God’s kindness to strangers, servants, hired help and the needy was terribly important. But God brought Job’s work to a standstill, to make room for God Himself to work. Now, four thousand years later, we remember Job not for how he raised sheep and oxen, but rather for the great work God did in him.
