By Gayle Worland – Wisconsin State Journal – More than 20 Christian congregations will gather Monday evening for the first Madison-area ecumenical Thanksgiving service in recent history. Church leaders from the Catholic, Orthodox, mainline Protestant, Evangelical and African American communities helped plan the one-hour service, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday at Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish, 418 Holly Ave. The prayer service has room for more than 1,000 people and will emphasize commonalities across denominations, said organizer John Schmitz. MADISON — Eight people from around the Diocese of Madison will soon cross an ocean to return a visit paid by a delegation from the diocese’s sister diocese last year. The delegation will leave Madison Sunday, July 23, and will return Friday, Aug. 4. This is the third delegation to be sent from the Diocese of Madison to the Diocese of Navrongo-Bolgatanga. There’s something awfully syncretistic about the 72-foot Statue of Liberation Through Christ, created by World Overcomers Outreach in Memphis. It looks like the New York Harbor’s Statue of Liberty, only instead of a torch, she’s carrying a cross, and instead of the July 4, 1776, tablet, she carries the Ten Commandments. Her crown says "Jehovah," and a tear is running down her cheek. A tear indeed. World Overcomers pastor Alton Williams says the 12,000-pound statue, which cost $260,000, was created to fight "godlessness in America." Like a lot of new InterVarsity staff members who arrived in Madison on June 19th for Orientation of New Staff (ONS), Amy Schoepf was fresh from her college graduation. Unlike most, though, Amy had been a speaker at her graduation at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
