Midvale Elementary School sits on an enviable stretch of land with lots of room for playing and gardening, but with that space comes lots of upkeep. So when a group offered to send in volunteers to tame the school grounds right before Midvale opened its doors to students again this fall, it wasn’t turned down. Nicola Porto, director of engagement of the Collaboration Project, which organized the work, said she was struck when she heard Principal Becky Galvan say, “What a relief,” in the midst of the undertaking on Aug. 28. The Collaboration Project was formed in 2019 for the…
At Care Net, we work hard to show women facing an unplanned pregnancy they have alternatives to abortion. But sometimes all the love, compassion and support we offer isn’t enough to offset the influence of the father of the baby – F.O.B. The encouragement and support of the father –or lack of those things—can mean the difference between life and death for his precious, unborn child. And that’s why the fatherhood program at Care Net is so vitally important. Here’s how it recently saved a baby’s life. Devin* felt abortion was the best option for him and his girlfriend but…
We want to update you on some exciting news about the Madison Christian Giving Fund. In collaboration with the National Christian Foundation-Wisconsin, we recently hired a full-time director, Mike Powers, formerly with Life 102.5FM. This past year the contributions received, and the grants made were $100,000, bringing us to a total of $840,000 distributed to further God’s Kingdom in the Madison Area over the last 8 years. None of this would have been possible without your generous support. We prayerfully believe that with staff and support from the National Christian Foundation, eventually enough funds can be raised to triple our…
SUN PRAIRIE — This growing city is well known for its sweet corn festival, an ear-nipping groundhog named Jimmy and Sunday night races around the clay oval of Angell Park Speedway, a tradition here since 1903. Habitat for Humanity of Dane County is also making its mark. Over the past 21 years, Habitat has constructed 48 homes in the city but that number is about to double with what will become the largest Habitat development in state history.
Have you noticed that there is increasing interest in the Holy Spirit? A friend of mine told me “people are tired of fluff and entertainment. They want the hard truth. As God touches them they become fired up to learn and experience more of the Holy Spirit. The fish are jumping in the boat!”
Over 165 years, the congregation of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Downtown Madison has always been willing to change for the sake of ministry, the Rev. Peter Beeson said. Now the church is planning for its most dramatic change ever with a proposal to demolish its building at 322 E. Washington Ave. for a $25 million to $31 million, 10-story redevelopment that would feature a new sanctuary, community spaces and offices on the first floor, topped by nine floors of mostly lower-cost apartments with below-ground parking.
Dane County After 5 Women’s Connection is holding a Guest Night on Monday, August 16, 2021. That means men are invited too. Randy Zemlicka of Monroe, Wisconsin, will be speaking on “Running the Marathon of Life.” We all have struggles whether it is our health, anxiety, or losing someone you love. Randy encourages us that “Life is a marathon we were never intended to run along.”
What was the first book in Memorial Library? Memorial Library has a long — and somewhat fraught — history, and when it opened on July 27, 1953, the arrival of the first book was cause for celebration. (Fraught: the UW had begged for 20 years to get the funds to build a new library, and even after the legislature agreed, construction was delayed first by a steel shortage and then an accident that caused the framework to collapse.)
WAUPUN, Wis. (WMTV) – A first of its kind graduation took place Tuesday, not in an auditorium, or a gymnasium, but inside a prison. A group of 20 inmates at the Waupun Correctional Institution made history. They graduated with a four-year bachelor’s degree. This is the first time the Wisconsin Dept. of Corrections (DOC) has sponsored this kind of inmate education program. “It’s been an experience like no other,” 34-year-old August White said. White has been behind bars for the last 16 years.
Fifteen pastors filter in on an overcast and surprisingly chilly summer day to our pavilion in William G. Lunney Lake Farm Park. Some gather and greet old friends and colleagues; others initiate introductions while they wait for us to get started. We welcome them to this initial gathering for Awaken Dane that is intended exclusively for pastors participating in our first cohort. But Awaken Dane itself is for more than just clergy. Over the next couple of months, these pastors will be inviting 8-10 congregation members from their respective churches to join our program. Together, pastors and their congregational teams will…
