Madison’s Lighthouse Christian School is one of 64 additional private schools in Wisconsin that can enroll students this fall using taxpayer-funded vouchers, the Department of Public Instruction announced Thursday. The West Side school, at 5202 Regent St., had 31 eligible applicants, ranking it 25th among the schools or school systems that signed up last month for an expansion of the program.
A few years ago, this would have been front-page news on every paper in the country. The nation’s largest Lutheran body, the 4.2 million-member Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, elected an Ohio church leader, the Rev. Elizabeth Eaton, as its presiding bishop.
Bethlehem Lutheran celebrated its final services Sunday, one a spartan farewell for current members who will never again worship as a family, the other a reunion that drew former congregants and clergy from across the state.

NEW LONDON, Wis. — Not much is left of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church after a tornado tore through New London this week — but three crosses are unharmed.
“Going to walk with the Prince of Peace, down by the riverside,” they sang in the Tenney Park Shelter this evening at the 16th annual Lanterns for Peace observance, which marks the anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. For no better reason than that Jesus is the Prince of Peace, it was a good evening to be present. The event is sponsored by a number of left-leaning peace organizations, such as Physicians for Social Responsibility, Pax Christi Madison, and the Madison Area Peace Coalition.
Just two private schools in Dane County have signed up to accept students under the new statewide voucher program. But there’s no guarantee Lighthouse Christian School in Madison or Westside Christian School in Middleton will participate.
MILWAUKEE -The Wisconsin Department of Justice announced Monday that Wisconsin officials participated in a large-scale, FBI-led child sex trafficking operation that rescued 10 children. The operation is known nationwide as Operation Cross Country VII, and the three-day operation in Wisconsin was conducted in the areas of Milwaukee, Madison, Wisconsin Dells and the Fox Valley, according to the release.
