Madison Catholic Bishop Robert Morlino remembers Pope Benedict XVI once telling a group of priests they must have the courage and humility to rest when they are tired — to take days off when needed. “I think he’s displaying the courage and humility he told priests to have,” Morlino said in an interview Monday, the day Benedict announced his surprise resignation.
Milwaukee-area churches are using Valentine’s Day to engage the faithful in some unabashed discussions about sex, love and romance. “These are real issues that affect people’s everyday lives,” said the Rev. Danny Parmelee of Epikos Church, which will explore a host of topics – including sex as part of God’s design, homosexuality and pornography – in a four-part series that launched Sunday.
It’s a tradition many people know as Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, a last blast of decadent foods before the start of 40 days of Lenten penance on Ash Wednesday. But in England, Ferris knew it as Shrove Tuesday. The term comes from the verb “shrive,” which means to obtain absolution for one’s sins by way of confession.
Milwaukee Working is a fledgling faith-based nonprofit aimed at creating jobs in the heart of one of the most impoverished cities in America. Housed in a former ice-cream factory near W. North Ave. and N. 30th St., its four start-up ventures employ about 15 workers, most of whom have spent time in prison or on the streets and had never held full-time jobs before. “This is a resurrection story – not just of a building, but of people’s lives,” said the Rev. Mike Murphy, an associate pastor at Elmbrook Church in Brookfield and one of Milwaukee Working’s founders.
MADISON, Wis. -While the snowstorm kept many people indoors, not everyone is fortunate enough to have shelter from the cold. Hypothermia is a serious concern across the state on the very cold nights. People looking for a place to stay out of the cold are turning to various organizations for help, including the Salvation Army. The organization’s homeless shelter on East Washington Avenue received extra cots and blankets from the Red Cross.
The 49ers’ 25-year-old starting quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, is adopted. I wonder if he sometimes feels for the woman who gave him up, who didn’t get the joy of knowing him and raising him. On that early December day in 1987, in a Wisconsin attorney’s office, four lives took wildly new turns.
The Wisconsin State Journal has been covering the trials of Care Net Pregnancy Center of Dane County as it goes before the city of Madison seeking support for an affordable housing project. In a city with a proven need for more affordable housing, Care Net’s plans are getting no traction because politics is getting in the way. (Updated on January 30th)
Madison residents have the option to attend large churches as well as small churches, but our megachurch options are not as robust as most other U.S. cities, according to the Barna research organization. Last week we reported that Madison ranked 75th in Barna’s index of Bible-Aware cities. But additional information indicates Madison has not embraced the trend of megachurch growth.
Two weeks ago, I cautiously returned to a choir rehearsal, this one for the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Choir. Each year, the Mt. Zion Baptist Church choir — one of the best in Madison, perhaps the best — expands and lets anybody join in for a performance at the Madison and Dane County MLK Jr. observance at Overture Center.
MADISON WI (ANS) — Some unique features of a first century synagogue found along the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee have sparked speculation that it may have belonged to a congregation of followers of Jesus of Nazareth, and not an ordinary Jewish community. However, the evidence is circumstantial so the story is pure speculation at this point.
