Dear Friends,
This week I’ve seen one "launch" of a new book and been invited to another. These are books worth knowing about.
A book "launch" signals the publication of a new title. It’s a lot like bringing the new baby home from the hospital and being visited by a parade of adoring, amazed, ooohing and ahhhing friends.
Scott Bessenecker, director of InterVarsity’s Global Trek project, has written an amazing, challenging, visionary book called The New Friars. It tells of Global Trek and, within the larger picture, a movement worldwide within the Body of Christ. God is calling people to accept a "Mother Teresa" calling to serve the poorest of the poor. Men and women are giving their lives to reach, serve, and love people living in garbage dumps, barrios, and refugee camps. The New Friars tells what God is doing in unexpected places using unusual, willing people.
This is a book every Christian should read. Believe me, Scott’s words will change your heart – and your vision. The next time you stroll down State Street past Peace Park, your heart will be different.
You can find this book through InterVArsity Press online or at a local Christian bookstore.
The second "newborn" in the book department comes from friend and amazing woman Lilada Gee. At the Marriot West, December 8 from 6-9 pm. Lilada will "launch" her book, I Can’t Live Like This Anymore.
This book pulls away a veil that the church has placed over the reality of sexual abuse in our midst, in our congregations, and in the lives of men and women we know and love. By refusing to be silent, Lilada has given permission to others. She is calling the church to talk about, admit, and deal with sexual abuse – both abuse in the past and present.
To find out more about this book, contact Lilada at Lilada@lilada.com or make your way to the Marriot West on December 8 to see the book for yourself.
Before I close…a couple more details:
The CareNet fundraising banquet is this Thursday. If you’d like more information or a last minute invitation to attend, contact Care Net at 608 259 1605.
Pray for Urbana, InterVarsity’s international missions conference scheduled for the last week in December. More than 20,000 young women and men will be attending – seeking information and God’s heart for missions.
Bless you All
Julia
