The Madison Area Jail Ministry is a “Ministry of Presence” according to Michael Marshall, volunteer Executive Director. The ministry was founded by 3 Lutheran pastors who recognized that no one was paying attention to the spiritual needs of thousands of people in the Dane County jail. Many of the people in the jail are filled with uncertainty waiting for their trial or sentencing, stressed about their children, family and future. Midvale Elementary School sits on an enviable stretch of land with lots of room for playing and gardening, but with that space comes lots of upkeep. In collaboration with the National Christian Foundation-Wisconsin, we recently hired a full-time director, Mike Powers, formerly with Life 102.5FM. This past year the contributions received, and the grants made were $100,000, bringing us to a total of $840,000 distributed to further God’s Kingdom in the Madison Area over the last 8 years. Over 165 years, the congregation of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Downtown Madison has always been willing to change for the sake of ministry, the Rev. Peter Beeson said. Now the church is planning for its most dramatic change ever with a proposal to demolish its building at 322 E. Washington Ave. for a $25 million to $31 million, 10-story redevelopment that would feature a new sanctuary, community spaces and offices on the first floor, topped by nine floors of mostly lower-cost apartments with below-ground parking.
