Lessons from the Amish for the Greater Church
CEN (Phoenix, AZ Oct 2006) Facing the emergencies of this past week in the Amish community brings home reminders for all Christians, churches, and ministries. As the Amish Community in Lancaster PA buries their beloved daughters and sisters, they remind us that to forgive is divine. Inviting the family members of the assailant to their usually closed funeral services, and offering to assist them in their grief with tangible gifts of kindness are a witness made in heaven.
Being ready to pray, care for and share the love of God with their enemies comes from a lifestyle of being ready emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually do so before a crisis happens. Focusing on God’s word as a daily habit, humbly seeking His direction when crisis hit, and calling upon Him for the strength and grace for the hour comes from an attitude of praise and thanksgiving cultivated well before the disaster itself. Bringing their mind and emotions captive to spiritual obedience before any tragedy occurs, and being ready physically to attend to the needs of their community independently, are all a part of the daily discipline of the Amish community lifestyle. Being ready, to be there in support of family and friends as well as others such as the assailant’s family and the nation at large, those who are outside their immediate circle, is their reminder to all Christians today. On behalf of CEN Chairman Mary Marr calls upon Christians: “Let us pray that we will be ready to be there when disasters strike us personally, in our church, our schools, through our nation. Let us be ready with added supplies to offer others in need who have not prepared in advance as the Bible instructs all while we share the Hope of Christ. Let us be ready in worship and praise so that our attitudes and responses would be God-honoring today and in any dark hour. Let us prepare for ourselves and avoid the deceitful pitfall of denial that tragedy will never strike near me. Let us seize the opportunities God gives us today to share His love and Hope, before it is too late.” Prayer:
