In golf, faith should be par for the course, author says by Mike Snider (www.usatoday.com)
Golfers will try virtually anything to shoot lower scores.
Maybe they should stop focusing on the scorecard and have a little faith. That’s part of the message in the new book Golf’s Sacred Journey: Seven Days at the Links of Utopia (Zondervan, $16.99).
In this modern-day parable, sports psychologist David Cook weaves his real-world experiences into a fictional tale of redemption.
…Johnny’s discovery of a new putting style, which serves as a metaphor for popular culture’s unwillingness to break from tradition despite "the power of truth," Cook says.
The golfer in the story is set free by his decision to embrace his faith and thrust aside tradition.
"What I try to do in the book is create a sense of freedom and faith, not rules and regulations," Cook says. "There is a (Bible) verse, Galatians 5:1: ‘It is for freedom that Christ came to set us free.’ "
