NEWS RELEASE
Habitat for Humanity of Dane County is seeking nine churches to raise funds and provide volunteers to build a home with a family at Northport Commons on the North Side of Madison. The Apostles Build project is expected to start in June or July and will be completed by the end of the year.
For two Catholic parishes that were part of Apostles Build II, the experience embodied everything that is necessary for good stewardship. “Apostles Build was the opportunity we were waiting for,” said Fr. David Timmerman, pastor at St. Andrew Parish, Verona, and St. William Parish, Paoli. “Both parishes enthusiastically supported Apostles Build II with donations of time and money.”
Timmerman said when he first came to St. Andrew and St. William, he found two “faith communities that were blessed with a number of skilled laborers. It seemed only right to bring the two together.” St. Andrew and St. William parish members worked with eight other Dane County churches to build a home with Sia Xiong and her seven children. The two Catholic parishes have already agreed to be part of Apostles Build III.
If your church would like to participate, please contact Peggy Halloran, phalloran@habitatdane.org.
Habitat for Humanity to host Apostles Build III
A single family home on the North Side of Madison will be Habitat for Humanity of Dane County’s third Apostles Build project. Thank you to the following churches that have already signed onto the project:
- Bethel Lutheran, Madison;
- Crossroad United Methodist Church, Waunakee;
- St. Andrew and St. William’s Catholic Church, Verona.
HFHDC launched its first Apostles Build in 2005 when 10 churches signed up to build for a family in need. In an Apostles Build project, churches come together to raise the money and provide the labor and prayer support to build a Habitat for Humanity home. The idea of going out into the community to serve others, in the way that Jesus’ apostles served, has attracted individuals in many churches.
With Habitat for Humanity, churches can share God’s love by building houses. It was 21 years ago when a group of concerned Christians in Oregon and Brooklyn were the beginnings of Habitat for Humanity of Dane County. Members of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Holy Mother of Consolation Catholic Church, People’s United Methodist Church, First Presbyterian Church in Oregon, the Brooklyn United Methodist Church and the Brooklyn Lutheran Church and other community representatives founded Habitat for Humanity of Oregon-Brooklyn, which later became HFH of Dane County.
Since Habitat for Humanity started building in Dane County, individual members of local faith communities have provided valuable financial, volunteer and prayer support. Although founded by Christians, HFHDC is non-denominational, and welcomes partnerships with all communities of faith, as well as corporate and individual support. Please contact Peggy Halloran if your church would be interested in building with HFHDC.
There will also be a 2009-2010 Apostles Build in Oregon. For more information about that project contact Don Lund at kegonsalund@charter.net.
Habitat for Humanity of Dane County provides simple, decent, affordable housing for families who might not otherwise become homeowners. Eligible families pay monthly mortgage payments on a 0% interest loan, and contribute 350 hours of sweat equity in the building of their homes and an additional 25 hours helping other Habitat homeowners build their homes.
