When they walk through the Valley of Weeping,
it will become a place of refreshing springs,
where pools of blessing collect after the rains!
— Psalm 84:6 NLT
We all want to meet God on the mountain top. We want to see Jesus transfigured before us, in dazzling white. We want a glimpse of heaven.
But life changing spiritual growth occurs not on the mountain top, but in the valley. It is in the valley, where we are cold, lonely and miserable that God wants to meet us. The servant of Elisha didn’t see the armies of God until he was surrounded with the armies of men. The disciples didn’t discover the Lord of peace and calm until they sailed with Him into the storm. Mary and Martha didn’t discover the Resurrection and the Life until Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days.
When we finally do reach the mountain top, what do we see? We see the valleys of our lives spread out before us. The mountain top is glorious because there we realize that every valley had a purpose, and by walking through them we were transformed. Our tears of brokenness give way to the showers of God’s love.
