SUMMARY:Friday Night Lecture Series: Can Ancient Christians Teach Us Anything About the Bible
DESCRIPTION:There is a long-unquestioned assumption that to understand biblical texts\, one must first understand the original historical contexts. However\, early Christian Bible readers didn’t share this assumption and often interpreted biblical texts allegorically. Does this mean that interpretations of the Bible from before the Enlightenment are irrelevant today? In this lecture\, Dr. Devin White will examine how Biblical Scholars are\, for the first time in two hundred years\, reexamining the “original historical context” assumption. \nDr. Devin White is a Fellow in Biblical Studies at the Lumen Center. He is also the Associate Pastor of Christian Education at High Point Church in Madison and a scholar of the New Testament and Early Christianity. \nThis event is NOT at Upper House! Due to a UW-Madison men’s Home Basketball Game\, we have moved this event to Geneva Campus Church (401 N Blackhawk Ave\, Madison\, WI 53705).

SUMMARY:Lumen Center @ Upper House || Dallas A. Willard Lecture: Making Sense of Your (Whole) Moral Self
DESCRIPTION:The recent academic study of ethics—our collective moral knowledge—has dramatically narrowed to focus on problem-solving\, even as theories have multiplied to satisfy the primacy of personal preferences. As a result\, professional\, collective\, and personal ethics frequently lack coherence and seem disconnected from one another. Our inaugural Dallas A. Willard lecture will address this problematic situation.\n\nRebecca De Young\, professor of ethics and philosophy at Calvin University\, will clarify the state of contemporary ethics and propose an alternative that could (and should) enliven our understanding of moral knowledge and equip each of us to live more integrated and coherent ethical lives.\n\n(This free public lecture is open to all university and local community members.)

SUMMARY:Does Archaeology Contradict Old Testament Stories?
DESCRIPTION:Have archaeologists “disproved” the historical reliability of the biblical texts? These concerns are as common as they are serious for believers\, whether confronting flashy news articles or hearing well-articulated\, challenging claims from scholars. \nThis lecture aims to contextualize such questions by describing what biblical archaeology is and why it is important for understanding the biblical world. By considering three brief case studies (the Hyksos\, “Solomonic Stables”\, and the siege of Lachish)\, we will examine how archaeology interacts with the Old Testament. This enables a perspective in which\, rather than “proving/disproving” historicity\, biblical archaeology properly applied can illuminate the background of Scripture and render its stories more understandable and more vivid. \nAn active field researcher\, Dr. Geoffrey Ludvik is currently co-director of archaeological excavations at Tell el-Hesi\, Israel (occupied 2800 BC through the Persian period). His interests include early Canaanite trade and technology\, the cultural world of the Patriarchs\, the Iron Age kingdom of Judah\, and the Old Testament period generally. \nHe earned his Ph.D. in Anthropology (Archaeology) with an emphasis in Hebrew and Semitic Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2018 and is the author of numerous articles and book chapters on Biblical and Mediterranean archaeology. Geoffrey is also an instructor at St. Ambrose Academy in Madison\, WI\, and a research fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Cobb Institute of Archaeology at Mississippi State University. Geoffrey lives in Madison\, WI\, with his wife and son.

SUMMARY:A Night with Brian McLaren
DESCRIPTION:Brian McLaren joins Bethel Lutheran Church on September 7 at 7:00 pm for an evening of straight talk about Christianity and genuine inspiration. McLaren is a Christian thinker\, author\, and activist. In 2015\, he was recognized by Time magazine as one of the 25 Most Influential Evangelicals in America. Since that recognition\, he has left the evangelical church and is no longer a pastor. His journey mirrors that of millions of Christians who have left the religion they were handed to become a different kind of Christian. He writes about this transformation in his more than dozen books. As a former pastor\, Brian D. McLaren is a champion for a more loving\, inclusive\, and contemplative Christianity. His newest book Do I Stay Christian? (May 2022) shows how people of faith benefit from religious doubts and how by confronting the ugly realities of Christian history\, people are shaped by the grace and life of Christ.

SUMMARY:Pressing Issues for the Global Church
DESCRIPTION:The Christian church is a multinational\, multicultural\, multilingual body that spans every society on the globe. In the twenty-first century\, the vast majority of Christians live in the “Global South”—Asia\, Africa\, and Latin America. Yet in many conversations about “the Church\,” Americans tend to focus on themselves. \nIn this summer series of conversations Upper House will host five talks to explore some of the dominant social issues in the global church—issues that affect all Christians\, albeit in different ways depending on location. We’ll seek to learn from people in our community who have experience and expertise in other parts of the world\, hopefully challenging and enriching our understanding of the church here in Madison\, too. \nThere will be six sessions in all\, meeting every other Wednesday evening.
