In the Eagles class, named after Edgewood College, seventh graders eagerly stand atop their seats to recite a mantra. “Welcome to the home of the Edgewood Eagles, where we soar to new academic heights, and we grow in maturity and responsibility, and we rely on the joy of the Lord to be our strength,” the students chant in unison. “May you be blessed today!” Lighthouse has grown rapidly…
By Shaina Nijhawan – NBC 15 – MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – What started as two East Side churches coming together has grown into a vibrant neighborhood hub—and now, it’s outgrowing its home. The Eastmorland Community Center opened in 2021 inside a 70-year-old church building. But with everything from community art classes to support groups and school partnerships now filling the calendar, leaders say it’s time for a rebuild. “This building has actually been in use since 1954,” said Rev. Staci Marrese-Wheeler, co-executive director of the Eastmorland Community Center. “It was actually sitting pretty ineffectively on the piece of property we…

What struck me was the reach and life-changing impact that each of these organizations has. Read more of this letter…

By Mike “Jocko” Jacques VERONA, Wis. By Nicole Pollack – Wisconsin State Journal – The Salvation Army of Dane County won city approval in 2019 to demolish its shelter for homeless women and families on East Washington Avenue and convert the site into a campus with office space, more beds and some low-income apartments. Half a decade later, the 44-unit Shield Apartments has been completed at the intersection of East Mifflin and North Blount streets. But the old shelter, an aging former Catholic school, still stands at 630 E. Washington Ave., just east of Downtown. It’s the only drop-in shelter for women and families in the…
